What Makes a High-Grade Rainbow Moonstone

Moonstone has been one of my favorite gemstones to work with since I first started making jewelry. There’s something truly magical about watching the blue light dance across the surface of a really fine stone. But I’ve learned from years of sourcing that the difference between an ordinary Moonstone and a breathtaking one comes down to a few specific qualities.

Rainbow Moonstone belongs to the feldspar mineral family. What makes it special is a phenomenon called adularescence, a soft, glowing light that appears to float just beneath the stone’s surface. In high-grade stones, this glow is vivid, intense, and shifts beautifully as you move the gem under light. The stronger and bluer the adularescence, the more valuable the stone.

Not all Rainbow Moonstones are created equal, though. Lower-grade stones may look milky or flat, with little to no visible shimmer. Learning to identify Rainbow Moonstone quality will help you choose pieces that truly showcase this gem’s incredible beauty.

How to Visually Identify High-Grade Rainbow Moonstone

When I’m selecting stones for my Moonstone collection, I look at each one under different lighting conditions. Here’s what I check and what you should look for when evaluating Rainbow Moonstone quality:

  1. Vivid blue shimmer. The most desirable Rainbow Moonstones display a strong, electric blue flash. Tilt the stone slowly under a light source. If the blue glow is intense and spreads across a wide area of the stone, that’s a sign of high quality.
  2. Strong adularescence. Hold the stone under a single light source and watch for a billowy, glowing effect that seems to come from inside the gem. High-grade stones produce a bright, three-dimensional glow, not just a surface reflection.
  3. Transparency and clarity. The best Rainbow Moonstones have good transparency with minimal visible inclusions. You should be able to see some light passing through the stone. Completely opaque or heavily clouded stones are lower grade.
  4. Smooth, lustrous surface. Run your eye across the polished surface. High-grade stones have a glass-like polish with a luminous quality. Dull, scratched, or rough surfaces indicate lower quality or poor craftsmanship in the cutting.
  5. Consistent color play. Turn the stone in all directions. Premium Moonstones show their blue flash from multiple angles, not just one narrow spot. The color should appear uniform across the stone without patches of milkiness or dead zones.

Here’s an example of what high-grade Rainbow Moonstone looks like in a finished piece. Notice the deep blue fire and clear transparency.

How I Grade Moonstone in My Studio

After years of working with Rainbow Moonstone, I’ve developed my own quality scale that goes beyond what you’ll find in textbooks. When a new batch of stones arrives, I go through each one individually under a single overhead light, and I sort them into three categories:

Exceptional: Full-face blue adularescence that’s visible without even trying to find it. The glow covers 80% or more of the stone’s surface and appears from multiple angles. The body is clean and transparent with minimal inclusions. These stones are rare, and they go into my most special pieces.

Good: Strong blue flash that covers most of the stone but might have a small area without glow. Clean body with minor inclusions that don’t distract from the overall beauty. These are beautiful stones that make wonderful jewelry.

Average: Partial or weak blue glow, visible inclusions, or milky body that mutes the adularescence. I don’t use these in my jewelry. Life is too short for dull Moonstones.

Rainbow Moonstone vs. Labradorite: A Designer’s Comparison

I work with both Rainbow Moonstone and Labradorite in my studio, and customers often ask me how they’re connected. Here’s the truth: they’re actually more closely related than most people realize. Both are feldspar minerals, and both create their optical effects through light reflecting off internal layers.

But the visual result is very different. Rainbow Moonstone has a lighter, more translucent body with a soft, floating blue glow (adularescence). It feels ethereal and romantic. Labradorite has a darker grey-black body with vivid, bold flashes of color, blue, gold, green, sometimes all at once (labradorescence). It feels dramatic and mysterious.

In terms of jewelry, I recommend Rainbow Moonstone for pieces where you want softness and a dreamy quality: bridal jewelry, delicate necklaces, and elegant earrings. Labradorite is perfect when you want something bold and attention-grabbing: statement necklaces, chunky bracelets, and pieces that start conversations. Most of my customers end up falling in love with both.

Key Grading Factors for Rainbow Moonstone

Beyond what you can see at a glance, there are several factors that gemologists and experienced jewelers use to grade Rainbow Moonstone:

  • Depth of color. The finest stones display a rich, deep blue that seems to glow from within, creating an almost three-dimensional effect. Stones with only a faint or whitish shimmer fall into lower quality categories.
  • Body color. While the flash should be blue, the body of a Rainbow Moonstone can range from transparent to translucent white. Stones with a clear, clean body color that lets the blue flash stand out are graded highest.
  • Cut quality. The way a Moonstone is cut directly affects how its adularescence displays. A well-cut stone, typically a smooth cabochon, maximizes the light effect and centers the blue glow. Poorly cut stones may show the shimmer only at an awkward angle.
  • Size and weight. Finding large, high-quality Rainbow Moonstones is increasingly difficult. Stones over 10 carats with excellent adularescence and clarity are considered rare and command higher prices.
  • Durability. High-grade Moonstone (6-6.5 on the Mohs scale) is less prone to cracking from dryness. Lower-quality stones can develop internal fractures over time, especially in dry climates.

Real vs. Imitation Moonstone

One important part of learning to identify Rainbow Moonstone is knowing how to spot fakes. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Opalite is not Moonstone. Opalite is a man-made glass that’s often sold as “Moonstone.” It has a uniform, milky glow without the directional blue flash of real Moonstone. If the shimmer looks the same from every angle and seems too perfect, it’s likely opalite.
  • Check for natural inclusions. Real Moonstone often has tiny, natural inclusions like centipede-like fractures or thin dark lines. A perfectly clear stone with no inclusions at all could be synthetic or glass.
  • Temperature test. Real gemstones feel cool to the touch and warm slowly. Glass imitations warm up quickly in your hands.
  • Price indicator. If a large, perfectly clear “Moonstone” piece is suspiciously inexpensive, question the source. Quality Rainbow Moonstone has real value and is priced accordingly.

“When you hold a truly exceptional Rainbow Moonstone, you’ll know it instantly. The blue fire catches your eye and doesn’t let go.”

GOOD TO KNOW

Moonstone is softer than many other gemstones (6-6.5 Mohs), so it benefits from protective settings and gentle handling. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and store pieces separately to prevent scratching.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Rainbow Moonstone FAQ

Is Rainbow Moonstone actually a Moonstone?

Technically, Rainbow Moonstone is a variety of Labradorite (a feldspar mineral), while traditional Moonstone is orthoclase feldspar. Both display adularescence, but Rainbow Moonstone is known for its stronger blue flash. In the jewelry world, both are commonly referred to as Moonstone.

Real Moonstone has a directional blue flash (adularescence) that changes as you tilt the stone. Fakes like opalite glow uniformly from every angle. Real stones also feel cool to the touch and may have tiny natural inclusions, which is perfectly normal.

Adularescence is the optical phenomenon that gives Moonstone its signature glow. Light enters the stone and scatters between layers of different feldspar minerals, creating a soft, floating light that appears to move as the stone is tilted. It’s what makes Moonstone so mesmerizing.

Yes, Moonstone is a 6-6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it needs a bit more care than harder stones like Sapphire. Clean with a soft damp cloth, avoid harsh chemicals, and store separately from harder gems. Check out my jewelry care guide for detailed tips.

Milky or cloudy Moonstones are lower-grade stones with more internal inclusions and less defined crystal layering. The blue flash depends on the precise arrangement of feldspar layers inside the stone. High-grade stones have better layer formation, producing a stronger and more vivid adularescence.

Of course! Moonstone is one of the stones I love working with most. I source my own gems and can create a piece featuring the exact color and quality you’re looking for. Visit my custom orders page to start the process.
