Necklace layering is one of my favorite trends. There’s something so personal about creating your own unique combination of chains and gemstone necklaces. But I know the frustration: you open your jewelry box and find your favorite pieces twisted into a stubborn knot!
After years of making necklaces and hearing from customers, I’ve learned exactly what causes tangling and, more importantly, how to prevent it. Let me share my best tips with you.
Prevention Tips for Layered Necklaces
The best way to deal with tangled chains is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Here are the techniques I recommend to all my customers:
- Wear them at different lengths. Smart layering means several levels, not one on top of another. If your chains sit at the same length, they’ll wrap around each other as you move. Space them out by at least 2-3 inches between each layer.
- Mix different chain types. Only chains of the same type tend to get tangled together. A delicate cable chain next to a rope chain is much less likely to knot than two identical cable chains side by side.
- Combine metal chains with beaded necklaces. Silk-knotted gemstone necklaces have a different weight and texture than metal chains, so they naturally stay separated. This is one of the biggest advantages of wearing gemstone pieces alongside your gold chains.
- “Frame” chains with gemstone necklaces. Place a gemstone necklace between two metal chains to create a natural barrier. The beads prevent the chains from twisting around each other.
- Mix smaller and larger stones. Different bead sizes create different weights and movement patterns, which naturally keeps everything separated in your neckstack.
How to Untangle Chains Safely
Even with prevention, tangles can happen. Here’s my step-by-step method for untangling delicate chains without damaging them:
- Unclasp everything first. Open all the clasps on every tangled chain. This immediately frees up the ends and makes the knot much easier to work with.
- Lay flat on a smooth surface. Place the tangled chains on a clean, flat surface (a white plate works great so you can see the links clearly).
- Apply a tiny drop of baby oil. If the knot is tight, a small drop of baby oil or olive oil on the tangled area helps the links slide past each other. Don’t use too much, just a tiny amount on the knot itself.
- Use two straight pins or needles. Gently insert the pins into the center of the knot and slowly work it apart. Be patient, pulling or tugging can make the knot tighter or damage the chain.
- Clean after untangling. Once separated, wipe each chain with a soft cloth to remove any oil residue.
PRO TIP
Never use force when untangling fine chains! Gold chains are durable, but yanking on a knot can stretch the links or weaken the chain. Gentle patience always wins.
Storage Solutions That Work
How you store your necklaces makes a huge difference. Here are my favorite storage methods:
- Hang them individually. A simple wall-mounted jewelry organizer with individual hooks keeps each necklace separate and visible. You can see your whole collection at a glance and pick your layers for the day.
- Use individual pouches. Soft fabric pouches (one per necklace) prevent tangles in drawers. Leave the clasp outside the pouch so it doesn’t catch on the chain inside.
- Try the straw method. Thread a delicate chain through a drinking straw and clasp it at the top. The straw keeps the chain straight and tangle-free, perfect for storage or travel.
- Never toss chains into a pile. I know it’s tempting after a long day, but dropping multiple chains into a bowl or dish is the fastest way to create tangles. Take 10 seconds to hang or separate them, and future-you will be grateful!
Traveling with Necklaces
Traveling with jewelry can feel stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how I pack my necklaces when I travel:
- The straw trick works here too. Thread each chain through its own straw and clasp it. Straws are lightweight and take up almost no space in your luggage.
- Use a travel jewelry roll. These have individual compartments or zippered pouches that keep each piece separate. Worth the small investment!
- Plastic wrap method. Lay necklaces flat on a piece of plastic wrap, cover with another piece, and roll gently. The cling keeps each chain in place.
- Wear your favorite layers. Instead of packing your most-worn pieces, just wear them on the plane or in the car. One less thing to worry about in your suitcase!

COMMON QUESTIONS
Necklace Chain FAQ
Chains tangle when they’re the same length, the same type, or stored together loosely. The movement of your body creates a rotational motion that wraps similar chains around each other. Varying lengths and mixing chain types with beaded necklaces are the most effective solutions.
Absolutely! The key is spacing your layers 2-3 inches apart and mixing different necklace types. Combine a delicate gold chain with a silk-knotted gemstone necklace for a beautiful, tangle-free layered look.
Hanging each necklace individually on its own hook is the best prevention method. If you prefer a drawer, use individual soft pouches or the straw method to keep chains straight and separated.
Not if you’re gentle! 14K solid gold chains are quite durable. The key is never pulling or yanking. Use two pins to gently work the knot apart, and add a tiny drop of baby oil if the links are stuck together.
There’s no strict limit! I’ve seen gorgeous stacks of 3-5 necklaces. Start with 2-3 at different lengths, and add more as you get comfortable. Mixing gold chains with colorful gemstone necklaces creates the most beautiful and tangle-resistant combinations.
