Why Colored Gemstones for an Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is one of the most personal pieces of jewelry you’ll ever own. You’ll wear it every day, and it will be part of every photo, every handshake, every moment. So why should it look like everyone else’s?
That’s the question more and more couples are asking, and it’s the reason gemstone engagement rings are having such a moment right now. A deep Blue Sapphire says something different than a Diamond. A vibrant Green Tourmaline tells a different story. A warm Citrine ring carries a completely different energy.
As a jewelry designer, I love making engagement rings because the conversation always starts with “what does this stone mean to us?” That personal connection is what makes a gemstone ring so special. But I’m also honest with my customers about which stones work best for daily ring wear and which need a little more thought. Let me share what I know.
Which Stones Are Durable Enough for Daily Wear
Rings take more abuse than any other type of jewelry. You bump your hands on doorframes, desks, steering wheels. Your ring touches everything you touch. That’s why gemstone hardness and durability matter so much for engagement rings specifically.
Here are the colored gemstones I recommend most confidently for daily ring wear:
Sapphire (Hardness: 9)
The gold standard for gemstone engagement rings. Only Diamond is harder. According to the GIA, Sapphires resist scratching, chipping, and daily wear beautifully. Available in blue, pink, yellow, green, and more. Princess Diana’s (now Kate Middleton’s) ring put Sapphire engagement rings in the spotlight, but they’ve been a classic choice for centuries.
Tourmaline (Hardness: 7 to 7.5)
Tourmaline comes in a remarkable range of colors, from electric green to vivid pink to bi-color watermelon. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, it’s durable enough for daily ring wear, especially in a protective setting. It’s a wonderful choice for someone who wants a unique color that you won’t see on anyone else’s hand.
Garnet (Hardness: 7 to 7.5)
Garnets go far beyond the deep red most people picture. Tsavorite Garnet is a vivid green that rivals Emerald. Spessartite Garnet glows with warm orange. Rhodolite offers a gorgeous raspberry pink. All are tough enough for everyday rings and offer exceptional brilliance.
Moonstone, Opal and Emerald in Rings
Moonstone, Opal, and Emerald each bring something extraordinary to an engagement ring. Here is what I focus on when designing with these stones:
- Moonstone (hardness 6 to 6.5) has that ethereal blue glow that so many brides fall for the moment they see it. In a bezel setting, where a metal rim wraps around the stone, it becomes one of the most striking rings I make. The way the adularescence shifts as the hand moves is something you really have to see in person.
- Ethiopian Opal (5.5 to 6) and Australian Opal (6 to 6.5) – if you want a ring that makes people stop mid-sentence, nothing compares to an Opal. Ethiopian Opal is known for its vivid, almost electric rainbow flashes; Australian Opal has incredible depth of color and is slightly denser. Both look breathtaking in a bezel setting, and both make engagement rings that are unlike anything else.
- Emerald (hardness 7.5 to 8) is hard enough on paper, but natural Emeralds almost always have internal inclusions that can make them prone to chipping along those inclusion lines. Choose a high-clarity Emerald and a protective setting if this is your dream stone.

Why the Setting Matters More Than You Think
For earrings and necklaces, the setting is mostly about aesthetics. For rings, the setting is about survival. The right setting can make a softer stone significantly more practical for daily wear, and the wrong setting can leave even a hard stone vulnerable.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Bezel setting wraps a metal rim around the entire perimeter of the stone. This is the most protective setting and my top recommendation for softer gemstones in rings. It shields the edges from bumps and impacts.
- Prong setting holds the stone with small metal claws, leaving more of the stone exposed. This shows off the gemstone beautifully but offers less protection. Best for harder stones like Sapphire (9) and Diamond (10).
- Low-profile settings sit closer to the finger and are less likely to snag or catch on things. For an everyday engagement ring, a lower profile is almost always more practical than a tall, raised setting.
When I design engagement rings, I always talk through these options with my customers. The goal is to find the balance between showcasing the stone’s beauty and making sure it’s protected for a lifetime of wear. If you’re curious about measuring your ring size at home, I have a guide for that too.
“An engagement ring should tell your love story. A colored gemstone does that in a way that nothing else can.”
COMMON QUESTIONS
Engagement Ring FAQ
Yes, if you choose the right stone and setting. Sapphire (9), Tourmaline (7.5), and Garnet (7+) are all excellent for daily wear. Softer stones like Moonstone and Opal can work in rings with protective bezel settings and a little extra care. The key is matching the stone’s properties to the right setting.
After Diamonds, Sapphire is by far the most popular choice. Its combination of striking color, extreme hardness (9), and rich history makes it ideal. Pink Sapphires in particular have surged in popularity over the past decade. Emerald and Aquamarine are also popular choices.
Absolutely! Custom engagement rings are some of my favorite projects. Visit my custom orders page to tell me about the stone, style, and metal you’re dreaming of. I’ll source the perfect gemstone and design something truly one of a kind for your proposal.
Clean it regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Remove it for heavy physical work, gym workouts, and chemical cleaning products. Store it in a soft pouch when not wearing it. Have the setting checked once a year by a jeweler to make sure the stone is secure. These simple steps will keep your ring beautiful for decades.
Fine colored gemstones, especially Sapphires, Rubies, and Emeralds, have historically held and increased in value. The gemstone market values rarity, color quality, and origin. A high-quality colored stone can be an excellent investment. But more importantly, the sentimental value of a ring that tells your unique love story is priceless.
